LocationOn Long Island, 21 km/13 Miles SE of Manhattan.


Airport Overview:
General: A vast airport consisting of 9 terminals connected by a free AirTrain system. Terminal Map.
Terminal 1: Is for Aeroflot, Aeromexico, Air China, Air France, Alitalia, Austrian, China Airlines, China Eastern, Japan Air Lines, Korean Air Lines, Lufthansa, Olympic, Royal Air Maroc, Saudia Arabian & Turkish.
Terminal 3: Is for Delta, Delta Connection & Comair. A small terminal with Departures and Check-in upstairs and Arrivals and ground transport on the lower level. There are courtesy phones for Rental Cars and Hotels on the lower level. Taxis wait outside on the lower level.
Terminal 4: Is for Aer Lingus, Aerolineas Argentinas, AeroSvit, Air India, Air Jamaica, Air Tahiti Nui, Asiana, Avianca, Azteca, Biman, Caribbean/BWIA, Continental, Continental Express, Copa, Czech Airlines, Egyptair, El Al, Emirates, Etihad, Harmony, Jet Blue (San Juan only), KLM, Kuwait, Lacsa, LAN, LOT, LTU, Mexicana, North American, Northwest, Pakistan, Royal Jordanian, Singapore Airlines, South African, Sun Country, Swiss, TACA, TAM, Thai, USA3000, Uzbekistan, Varig, Virgin.
Terminal 5: Is finally open and is for jetBlue.
Terminal 7: Is for Air Canada, ANA, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Iberia, Icelandair, QANTAS, United & US Airways.
Terminal 8: Is for American Airlines (Intl & Caribbean), Finnair & Malev.
Terminal 9: Is for American Airlines & American Eagle.

By Road: Note that traffic can be terrible between JFK and manhattan, with transfers taking upto 2 hrs at worst times. Using the SkyTrain will help to avoid this uncertaintly.
By Helicopter:
A new helicopter service, operated by US Helicopters, now runs from New York's downtown Heliport at Wall St to Terminal 9 (American Airlines) at JFK. Cost $159 one way/8 mins flight time. 12 flights daily. See www.flyush.com.
By Taxi:
General: Except to Manhattan, the fare within New York City is metered plus tolls, if any. Tipping is optional. There is a 50 cent surcharge for trips commencing between 2000 and 0600 (except to Manhattan). One fare pays for all passengers. 4 passengers is the limit for New York City cabs. Meter must read $2 at the start of the trip (except to Manhattan).
Meter Rates: Initial Fare $2.50, then $0.40 per fifth of a mile or 1 minute waiting time. Mon-Fri 1600-2000 $1 surcharge. Nightly 2000-0600 $0.50 surcharge.
Typical Fares: Tolls are in addition to metered fares and are shown later.
To Manhattan (Flat Fare to all parts): $45/40-100 mins depending on Traffic, Between the Terminals: $3-$9, Brooklyn: $26-$45, Cruise Ship Passenger Terminal ~$35+tolls, The Bronx $39-$44, Queens $17-$20, La Guardia Airport $26-30, Coney Island: $34-38, Kew Gardens $16-20, Shea Stadium $22-26, Co-op City $42-46, Riverdale $51-55, To Staten Island $51-$58, Lynbrook $18/20-30 mins & Newark Airport $74-78 + $15 tolls.
Tolls are as follows: $3.50 at the Queens Midtown Tunnel, the Triboro Bridge, and the Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel. It should be noted that the Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel has been closed to westbound traffic since 9/11/01. There is no toll at the Brooklyn Bridge, Manhattan Bridge, Williamsburg Bridge or Queensboro (59th Street) Bridge, but these East River crossings could be less direct or more congested for your trip.

By Private Bus: 
New York Airport Service to Manhattan: Routes: Runs the manhattan Express to the Port Authority Bus Terminal (42nd Street & 8th Avenue) & Grand Central Terminal. Change there for Penn Station & all Midtown (Manhattan) hotels. Transfer is available to hotels between 27th and 59th Street. Buses stop outside each terminal at JFK at the Express Bus Stops. Timings: Runs every 20-30 mins 0600-2300. Cost: To Penn Station & Midtown Hotels $15 one way/$27 round trip. Takes 45-65 mins, longer at peak hours. An airport-airport service to La Guardia is also available for $13 and to Newark for $22 (change buses at Port Authority Bus Terminal). Contact: Tel (212) 875 8200.
JFK Flyer MTA Long Island Bus: Hempstead, Rockville Ctr, Lynbrook, Valley Stream, Rosedale, Springfield Gardens, to and from JFK. Bus: $2 exact fare. Cash (in quarters) or Metrocard required. Runs Weekdays: Every 35-45 mins 0445-0005. Saturday/Sunday: Every 45 mins 0445-0000. Tel (516) 766-6722.
Olympic Airporter: Bus to Yardley PA ($56), Princeton NJ (inc Hyatt Regency) $51, Hilton Hotel East Brunswick NJ ($47), & Jamesburg NJ. Also runs to Newark & Philadelphia Airports.

By Public Bus: 
These buses depart from the public bus stop on the east side of terminal 4. From other terminals use the AirTrain to connect.
MTA Q3 bus to Jamaica: Route: Airport (Terminal 4, public bus stop on east side of terminal) - N Boundary Rd - Farmers Blvd - Hillside Ave - 165th St Bus Terminal, Jamaica. Timings: Runs 24hrs every 12-30 mins. Cost: $2. Payable in cash or with a Metrocard.
MTA Q10 bus to Kew Gardens: Route: Airport (Terminal 4, public bus stop on east side of terminal) - Conduit Ave - Lefferts Ave (not AirTrain stop) - Austin St/Kew Gardens-Union Turnpike Subway Station. Timings: Runs 24hrs every 3-30 mins. Cost: $2. Payable in cash or with a Metrocard.
MTA Q10A bus from Kew Gardens: Route: Austin St/Kew Gardens-Union Turnpike Subway Station - Van Wyck Expressway - Airport (all terminals). Operates towards the airport only. Timings: Runs weekday mornings every 20 mins. Cost: $2. Payable in cash or with a Metrocard.
MTA B15 Bus to Brooklyn: Route: Airport (Terminal 4, public bus stop on east side of terminal) - Lefferts Blvd AirTrain stop - S Conduit Ave - Fountain Ave - Dumont Ave - New Lots Ave - Hegeman Ave - Church Ave - E 98th St - Ralph Ave - Buffalo Ave - Bergen St - Troy Ave - Lewes Ave - Broadway/Marcus Garvey Blvd. Timings: Runs 24hrs every 14-30 mins during the day and every 45 mins at night. Cost: $2. Payable in cash or with a Metrocard.

Prime Time Connecticut Airport Shuttle: Runs a shared van service to Connecticut. Cost to Hotels: Bridgeport $59 first person ($39 extra passengers), Greenwich $52 ($39), New Haven $60 ($39), New Rochelle $44 ($39), Westport $58 ($39) & White Plains $50 ($39). Airlink Shuttle: Runs a direct door-to-door service to homes and hotels in Manhattan. $19 to Manhattan, $19 from Manhattan, $33 round trip. Tel 1 877 599 8200 or 1 212 812 9000. There is a courtesy phone at the information boards in each terminal. Tel 24 hrs in advance for reservations going to the airport.
Classic Airport Shuttle: Runs to destinations on Long Island. Freephone at transport info center.
Connecticut Limousine LLC: Runs to Westchester Co & Connecticut. Freephone at transport info center.
American Skybus: Runs shared ride shuttles connecting Newark, NJ and JFK. Departing every 2 hrs from 0500 from outside Greyhound bus Stop on the Hilton side of Penn Station in Newark City to all Airline Departure levels at JFK. Shuttles leave Terminal 4 passenger pickup ramp on the vehicle Exit end from 0600. Tel 877 775 9287.
Airporter: Route: Runs scheduled vans to Newark Airport, Princeton, other places in New Jersey and also Yardley, PA. Timings: Runs ~every 2 hrs 0700-1700 from JFK. Cost: From $27/90 mins+. Contact: Tel (1-800 385 4000 or 609 587 6600). Freephone at transport info center.
Trans-Bridge Bus Lines: Runs vans to Hunterdon, NJ, Warren, NJ, Lehigh, PA, Bucks, PA & Northampton, PA.  Contact: There are free courtesy phones in each terminal at the Ground Transportation info desks.
Winston Transportation: Offers vans and private transfers. Call 1 800 424 7767 or (631) 924 1200.
Dave's Best Limousine: Offers vans and shared  transfers to Bordentown NJ, Philadelphia Airport, Philadelphia city & vicinity.

AirTrain Rail service: Air Train is a monorail train that stops at all terminals at JFK and runs very regularly on 3 different routes: Red Route: to Jamaica Station on Long Island. (Note Jamaica LIRR train station coincides with Sutphin Blvd Archer Av JFK Airport Subway station. Confusingly, this combined station is also known as AirTrain stop D). Green Route: to Howard Beach Subway station. Yellow Route: Runs between the terminals. The Red & Green routes also stop at Station C (Federal Circle which houses the Rental Cars, Cargo & Hotel shuttles. Cost: $5 per person, and the ride takes 10-15 mins. Transfer between terminals is free. Buy a metrocard from the machine with US dollars or credit card. Timings: Air Train operates Mon-Fri 0500-0300 every 5-20 mins and at weekends 0400-0300 every 12-30 mins.
Transfer at Howard Beach (Station A) to the A line subway trains (every 5-20 mins) for a slower but cheap ($2) run into Manhattan, or at Sutphin Blvd/Jamaica to the E, J or Z lines (every 5-12 mins $2).
Transfer to LIRR (Long Island Railroad) at Jamaica for a faster train to Penn Station (Manhattan), and destinations on Long Island such as Lynbrook, Babylon, Hempstead, Garden City, Queens, Brooklyn, Huntington, Oyster Bay, Westhampton, Montauk, Southampton, East Hampton, Islip, Greenport, Ronkonkoma, Deer Park & many more. Total cost to Penn station in Manhattan $12/30-45 mins. Be warned, the LIRR services from Penn station before 0700 on weekends & holidays are infrequent.
Red Route Detailed Route: Jamaica Station/Station D - Federal Circle/Station C (for Rental Cars, Cargo & Hotel shuttles) - Term 1 - Term 2/3 - Term 4 - Term 5 - Term 6 - Term 7 - Term 8/9 - Federal Circle/Station C - Jamaica Station.
Green Route Detailed Route: Howard Beach Station/Station A (serves the Subway system & Long term parking C) - Lefferts Blvd/Station B (for long term parking A & B) - Federal Circle/Station C (for Rental Cars, Cargo & Hotel shuttles) - Term 1 - Term 2/3 - Term 4 - Term 5 - Term 6 - Term 7 - Term 8/9 - Federal Circle/Station C - Lefferts Blvd/Station B - Howard Beach Station/Station A.

All County Express Bus is reported to run to LGA.
To Newark airport: Taxi $75 + tolls. 75-90 mins.

Airporter: Runs scheduled vans ~every 2 hrs 0700-1700 ex EWR & 0900-1900 ex JFK. Takes 90 mins. Cost: From $27/90 mins+. Contact: Tel (1-800 385 4000 or 609 587 6600). Freephone at transport info center.
Newark Airport Service runs buses for $22 one way.
New York Airport Service Bus to LGA every 20-30 mins 0630-2000, $22 (change buses at Port Authority Bus Terminal). Contact: Tel (212) 875 8200.
Olympic Airporter Bus is reported to run to Newark Airport.

Rental Cars:
On-Airport Rental Car Providers: Take the AirTrain to Station C: Federal Circle which houses the Rental Cars: AVIS, Budget, Dollar, HERTZ & National. There are free courtesy phones in each terminal at the Ground Transportation info desks to contact the various companies.

Car Parking: Terminal Parking: $33 per day. Long Term Parking $18 per day. There is now a cellphone waiting car park at this airport, where cars may wait for arriving passengers to call.
Notes: For help on transport to/from all NYC Airports call 1 800 AIR RIDE. The closest public transport to the New York Cruise Passenger Ship Terminal is the A, C or E train at the 50th St. station (at 8th Ave). Cross town City buses are also accessible from 52nd St at 12th Ave.
Baggage Storage: Left luggage facilities reported to be available.
Currency Services:
ATMs/Cash Machines and Bureau de Change in arrivals.
Airport Hotels: There are many hotels near the airport, most of which can be contacted free from the information boards in arrivals. There is a hotel reservation desk in the arrivals area of each terminal. JFK Inn Tel 1 800 734 5199 runs a shuttle to the airport.
Steve's Tip: Although far from a perfect solution, probably the most reliable (and not overly expensive) way to and from Manhattan is to take the AirTrain to Jamaica (Station D) and transfer to the LIRR to Penn Station.
