People often ask me to recommend hotels around the world. The following are some of those that I have found good value and pleasant. There is no guarantee that others will find them so. No responsibility can be taken for problems arising from any recommendation listed here.

Boston, USA:  Oasis Guest House. 22 Edgerly Rd. Tel +1 617 267 2262 or 1 800 230 0105. Good location in the Back Bay Area, close to the Hynes Convention Center Metro stop. ot the coolest rooms in summer, but great otherwise. US$120-180 per night.  Updated Sep07 Visit.

Cape Town, South Africa:  Victoria Junction Hotel. Tel +2721 418-1234. A Protea hotel of the highest standard with great views, lovely modern rooms and a nice beakfast. Conveniently located near the Waterfront.  Updated Nov04 Visit.

Colombo, Sri Lanka:  Browns Beach Hotel. 157 Lewis Place, Negombo. Tel +94 031 2222 031. A lovely beachfront hotel full of old charm, fabulously friendly staff and a wide clean beach. Surprisingly good value. Located on Negombo Beach it is about 25 mins drive from the airport.  Updated Jul06 Visit.

Easter Island, Chile:  Hotel Orongo. Tel 56-32-100-294. In central Hanga Roa. Very comfortable and friendly with doubles at US$60 per night (singles US$40, triples US$75). Credit cards 10% extra.  Updated May05 Visit.

Hong Kong:  Luxe  Manor Hotel. Tel +(852) 3763 8880 or 8888. 39 Kimberley road, Tsim sha tsui, Kowloon, Hong Kong. A humorously furnished boutique hotel with a great location near Nathan Rd. Costs ~HK$ 1000. Breakfast and intenet access included. The smart Eaton Hotel on Nathan road has some good deals available. Also the more basic, but excellent value Shamrock Hotel, 223 Nathan Rd, Kowloon. Tel +852 2735 2271.  Updated Jul07 Visit.

Keflavik, Iceland:  Alex Motel. +354 421 2800. The closest hotel to the airport, about 1-2 km from the terminal. A choice of Wooden cabins, standard rooms, bunks or camping. Hot tub available for guests. Prices are high, but that is normal for Iceland. Free transfer to and from the airport can be arranged.  Updated Jul05 Visit.

Lerwick, Shetland Islands:  Breiview Guest House. 43 Kantersted Rd, Lerwick. +44 (0)1595 695956. A very friendly, clean, well-run guest house with comfortable rooms, a short walk to the south of Lerwick. Wonderful cooked breakfast included in the very reasoinable room rates.  Updated Jul05 Visit.

Ljubljana, Slovenia:  Hotel Park, Tabor 9, Ljubljana. +386 1 433 13 06. Not very inspiring, but very clean, pretty central and with a good-sized breakfast included, all from €53 for a single with own shower & TV.

Melbourne,Australia:  Quest on Bourke. 155 Bourke Street, Melbourne Victoria 3000. Tel +61 (0)3 9631 0400. Beautiful serviced apartments in a very central location. Updated Dec05 Visit.

Nairobi, Kenya:  Intercontinental Hotel. Situated close to the centre of the city, this hotel is not cheap, but is very luxurious with great restaurants and relaxation facilities. Tel +254 20 320 00000.  Updated Mar05 Visit.

New York City, USA:  Habitat Hotel. 130 E57th St. Tel +1 212 753 8841. Very good location in Manhattan, and one of the few quality budget hotels. Rooms start at around US$75 per night.  Updated Mar04 Visit.

Rarotonga, Cook Islands:  Sunrise Beach Bungalows. Tel (682) 20417. Lovely beach front cottages and great home-cooked food. Great value and a good location near Muri. Very hospitable host.  Updated Nov05 Visit.

Santiago, Chile:  Apart Hotel Citycenter. Calle Moneda 1541. Tel (56 2) 698 0404. Situated above the Tur Bus terminus (for airport buses) close to the centre of the city. It is is a mini apartment with its own kitchen, living area, CD player bedroom, bathroom etc. It can be booked from the baggage hall at the airport, where there is a hotel booking desk. Rates vary, but towards the end of the day you can get a great bargain of US$40 per night for a double. Usual rates are a little higher at US$59.  Updated May05 Visit.

Singapore:  Hotel 1929. 50 Keong Saik Road, Chinatown. Nearest MTR station Outram Park. Tel +65 6347 1929. A stunning little boutique hotel in the heart of Chinatown. Very small rooms, but so beautifully appointed they have to be seen!! Free internet and minibar in rooms. Prices from SGD$110 + tax. A little gem!  Updated Aug06 Visit.

Sydney, Australia:  ◊Medusa Hotel. 267 Darlinghurst Road, Darlinghurst, Sydney, 2010 NSW Australia. Telephone +61 (02) 9331 1000. A beautiful boutique hotel with very tasteully decorated rooms. Beautiful private courtyard. ◊Morgan's of Sydney. 304 Victoria Street, Darlinghurst, Sydney. Tel +61 (02) 93607955. Apartment style hotel. Each room has a kitchenette, and many rooms are suites. Rooftop terrace available.  Updated May07 Visit.
