Airport Overview:
There are 2 terminals, Terminal 1 (used for low-cost airlines and recently re-opened) and Terminal 2 which is divided into 2A & 2B. These 2 are close together and can easily be walked. Terminal 2A is for Schengen destinations, while terminal 2B is for non-Schengen. Transfer to Terminal 1 needs a taxi or bus #200. Right beside terminal 1 is a small GA terminal for private flights.

If going to the city, you can catch the Repter Bus on the same side of the main road. If going to Terminal 2, you must cross over. At Terminal 2, the bus stop is on the lower level between terminals 2A and 2B.
BKV Bus #93 to Köbánya-Kispest metro: The Airport bus 93 (Reptér-busz) runs between the underground terminus at Kőbánya-Kispest (the end of line M3) and Ferihegy Airport (terminal 1 only). It goes via the suburb of Pestszentlőrinc to Kőbánya-Kispest metro station on a significantly longer route than the 200E Airport service bus). Route: Ferihegy Terminal 1 (across the road from) - Igló utca - Csévéző utca - Felsőcsatári út - Kőbánya-Kispest. Takes ~20 mins. From the Kőbánya-Kispest station you need another ticket for the metro (HUF 170) to take into you town. The best place to get off is probably Deák tér (15-20 mins), where all 3 underground lines meet, and which serves as a interchange for trams and buses. On arrival at Kőbánya-Kispest station just follow signs for the bus stop and then for the Repter Busz. Buses run every 10-30 mins 0430-2345. During most of the day they are every 15 mins. Cost: A one-way through-ticket to the city costs HUF 185.
BKV Bus #200E to Köbánya-Kispest metro:

Preferred Bus

Bus#200 runs between the underground terminus at Kőbánya-Kispest (the end of line M3) and Ferihegy Airport (both terminals). Route: Ferihegy Airport Terminal 2 (stops halfway between 2A & 2B on the arrivals level) - Határőr Igazgatóság - Repülőtér, D porta - Ferihegy Terminal 1 (across the road from) - Csévéző utca - Felsőcsatári út - Kőbánya-Kispest Metro Station. From the Kőbánya-Kispest station you need another ticket for the metro (HUF 170) to take into you town. The best place to get off is probably Deák tér (15-20 mins), where all 3 underground lines meet, and which serves as a interchange for trams and buses. On arrival at Kőbánya-Kispest station just follow signs for the bus stop.
Timings: Buses run Mon-Fri 0430-2346. From 0500 until 2000, buses are every 10-12 minutes. Outside these times, 2 or 3 times an hour. Weekends & Holidays 2-4 times an hour 0430-2346. Transfer Times: Takes 12 mins from Terminal 1 and 24 mins from T2. Cost: You need a HUF 400 (or is it 320, see below!) ticket to travel on the bus, which can be bought on the bus. Note that these tickets are NOT the same as the regular bus & Metro tickets in use in the city. For latest details see here.
Notes from a Traveller: This service is much better suited to airport passengers: it is larger, so bigger luggage can be transported; it operates more frequently; and it operates for longer hours provideing a link between the city and the airport even after midnight and at early dawn.
Notes from a traveller October 2010: Tickets are now HUF 400 - the bus driver can sell you a ticket for the bus trip to Krispet AND a ticket for the Metro ride from Krispet into town (just hand him the money and say "metro please" - my driver spoke a little English)
Notes from a traveller October 2010: The single ticket price for all modes of public transport is HUF 320 (in 2011 too). This IS valid (it is the same) on the 200E Airport Service too. On surface transport you cannot transfer with the single tickets but on the metro you can transfer only between the 3 metro lines, nothing else. You can buy tickets at all metro stations and at Ferihegy airport (both terminals from the Post office (Posta) and newspaper agents Relay and Lapker), and also from the ticket vending machine at terminal 2A arriving hall where you can pay by credit card too. You might buy tickets from the driver (out of opening hours ie 2200-0600) for a higher price (400 HUF). You can buy transfer tickets (átszállójegy) at some ticket offices, but not everywhere for HUF 490 (cheapest option to get to the center by metro and bus, unless you buy a multiple day tourist pass).
BKV Buses #166, 166A & 266: These buses depart from the other side of Ferihegy airport railway station (at terminal 1) and they going to the city suburbs only. Route & Timings: For details see here.
MAV Minibus: For passengers going to the airport, arriving in Budapest by train, MAV run minibuses from the main train stations, for Intercity arrivals, for HUF 1800.
Malév Minibus: Malev Airlines runs minibuses from the airport to Debrecen, Gyór, Miskolc, Pécs & Szeged.

By Train:
General: A train track runs right across the main road from Terminal 1, and a regular train service to the city centre has finally been established. To find the station exit the terminal, turn left and follow the path to the main road. There is a bridge to cross the road, and the station is just on the other side. To get to the station from terminal 2, use the 200 bus (see above).
Route: Airport (opposite Terminal 1) - various local stops - Budapest Nyugati railway station. All trains on the Budapest - Cegled - Szolnok route stop at the airport station.
Timings: Trains leave the airport Mon-Fri every 15-20 mins 0405-1740, then every ~30 mins until 2146, 2245 & 2353. Weekends similar, but trains start at 0431. Trains leave the city Mon-Fri at 0300, 0345, 0440, 0525, 0550, then every ~20 mins until 1950, 2045, 2130 then hourly until 0030. Weekends at 0300, 0345, 0440, 0525, then every ~30 mins until 1950, 2045, 2130 then hourly until 0030. Travel Time: 22-25 mins.
Cost: One way HUF 305. Tickets can be bought at the Tourist office in Terminal 1 0900-2200, and outside these times from the conductor on the train. At the city railway station, tickets can be bought from a machine or at the booking office.
Notes from a Traveller October 2010: I didn't manage to find any of the automatic ticket machines in Budapest Train Station which were mentioned on the site. Queues were MASSIVE in the ticket hall so I just bought a ticket onboard (same price - 305 Florints o/w).
Notes from a Traveller December 2010: You can find real-time information of train timetables (from Nyugati station (central) to Ferihegy (at terminal 1)) at http://www.mav-start.hu/english/index.php  where if you register, you can buy train tickets as well. You won't need to print the ticket. You can get train tickets automatically at the following stations:
http://www.mav-start.hu/ajanlatok/utazasi_ajanlat.php?mid=148526fc4e9d6e. Unfortunately not yet at Ferihegy airport station. The one-way full-fare to Nyugati is HUF 365 in 2nd class. Note: you have to buy a suplement on Intercity trains so it's better to choose the relatively frequent suburban trains (all train on the line stop at Ferihegy). The journey time is 22 minutes, but sometimes you can expects delays, normaly not more than 10 minutes. At Nyugati (center) you can easily
verify if the train goes to airport because between the destinations it shows "AIRPORT" on the infromation screen.
